World's longest cable car route unvailed on Phu Quoc Island

On February 4, 2018, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province, and Phu Quoc island district’s People’s Committee along with Sun Group have officially unveiled the world’s longest three-rope cable car system that now links An Thoi town on the southern tip of Phu Quoc to Hon Thom, the biggest islet south of what is known as the ‘Pearl Island’.

The Hon Thom cable car system and Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park opens to the public on February 14, 2018, just in time for the Lunar New Year (Tet) holidays.

The cable car system is the first and most prominent feature in Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park, which has been developed by Sun Group on Hon Thom islet, just south of Phu Quoc Island.

At a length of 7,899.99 metres, Hon Thom cable car system will link An Thoi town to Hon Thom islet, creating a new and attractive tourism experience for visitors coming to Phu Quoc, one of Asia’s fastest growing and most talked about tourism destinations. During the ceremony, the cable car system was officially recognised as the world’s longest three-rope cable car by Guinness World Records.

The cable system has two stations and six lattice towers of which the tallest is tower T4 with a height of 174 metres. With 69 cabins, each with a capacity of 30 guests, running at the maximum speed of 8.5 metres per second, Hon Thom cable car system has shortened the time of moving from An Thoi town to Hon Thom islet to 15 minutes (a trip which would take at least 30 minutes by canoe). All cabins come equipped with Wi-Fi.

Using the newest and safest three-rope cable car technology in the world, Hon Thom cable car system moves smoothly without buffeting. In the event of bad weather, the system will automatically stop cabins leaving the station.

Hon Thom cable car system offers tourists a wonderful and exciting journey above the sea with 360 degree panoramic views of An Thoi archipelago and southern parts of Phu Quoc island.

The destination of Hon Thom cable car system is located in Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park, a brand new complex for entertainment and recreation on Hon Thom. There tourists can run across the white sand and plunge into crystal clear water on this paradise beach while admiring a backdrop of tick green jungle and all the natural stones which rise above the seashore like an installation. During the first stage of opening, Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park will offer a range of services and water sports, such as scuba diving, sea-walking and kayaking…

Giving a speech at the Launching Ceremony of Hon Thom Cable Car, Mr. Pham Vu Hong- Chairman of Kien Giang’s People Committee said: “During the last few years, Phu Quoc tourism has witnessed breakthrough development, thanks to the investment from large  enterprises. New and attractive tourism products like the Complex of Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park that Sun Group is opening today will be a trigger to bring Phu Quoc new flows of tourists. The complex will also contribute to the range of entertainment and recreational services offered in the region and increase the amount of time that tourists stay on Phu Quoc.”

Mr. Dang Minh Truong- Vice Chairman and CEO of Sun Group said: “Phu Quoc is known as the Pearl Island of Vietnam and has potential that no other place in the world can compare to, even Maldives, Bali in Indonesia or Phuket in Thailand. However, the growth rate of Phu Quoc tourism during the last years has not lived up to the island’s potential considering the beauty that Mother Nature has granted to the island.

In 2017, Phu Quoc welcomed nearly three million tourists. Although the number of visitors to the island had doubled since 2016, the gap between Phu Quoc and a destination such as Phuket remains significant — by way of comparison, Phuket welcomes 8 million visitors a year on average. One of the main reasons is that Phu Quoc does not offer many entertainment and recreational activities and tourism services are still poor, especially in the south of the island.

Choosing to invest in the south of the island, Sun Group first brought Phu Quoc the world’s best new resort in 2017, namely, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. With the launch of Hon Thom cable car and the entertainment and recreational activities now offered in Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park today, Sun Group has contributed new and high-quality tourism products to increase tourism arrivals and spending to help make the south of Phu Quoc become an attractive destination that fulfils its potential.”

The representative of Sun Group added that, in the near future, there will be new categories and products put into service, including a village with hundred-year-old fruit trees garden for tourists to visit and where they can enjoy collecting fruit. Thousands of fruit trees will also be newly planted on Hon Thom islet to increase the ‘green experience’ for tourists.

Together with many other resorts and entertainment complexes being built in the south of Phu Quoc, Sun Group is striving to change the face of Phu Quoc tourism, create new jobs for locals and promote Phu Quoc’s economic and social development.

The launch of these new tourism products also underscores the visionary decisions taken by Phu Quoc’s authorities and locals who share a desire to make the south of the island the most attractive destination in the region and to make tourism the key industry, according to the guideline of Decision No. 8- NQ/TW by the Government.
